The Soweto ‘76 3D Interface is a unique, three-dimensional archive interface that allows visitors to easily guide themselves through a 3D re-creation of the township, combining both education and exploration as they learn about the places, people, and past of Soweto.
Soweto ’76 3D will serve as a model for the digital preservation of historic resources endangered by the competing needs for urban redevelopment and tourism across South Africa. Much of the history of the anti-apartheid movement took place in the townships amongst what many would consider to be “the mundane” and ordinary structures and environments of the disenfranchised. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a different set of criteria and strategies for documenting and preserving these important sites with the internet providing an opportunity to do so.
